NIKOS NIKOLAIDIS
A CINEPHILE TRAVELOGUE BY JACQUES SPOHR

SYNOPSIS

NIKOS NIKOLAIDIS – A CINEPHILE TRAVELOGUE BY JACQUES SPOHR

This book is intended to be an introduction, an investigation, a journey that is structured around seven meetings that took place during two stays in Athens, in June 2019 and then in February 2020, to delve into a subject that was becoming more and more important. I have therefore chosen to present the reality of these moments in chronological order, and to introduce each of them in the manner of a report or a short investigation. A kind of “Looking for N.N.” with a red and tenuous thread, searching for the fetishistic and melancholic obsessions of the filmmaker, the cinephile and of course the cinephile filmmaker worshipping cinema’s icons. Nikolaidis or the last representative of an authentic black, necrophiliac, (extra)lucid, tragic, and brilliant romanticism.

It’s out of the question to propose a classic monograph that would claim to dissect everything with the high level and intelligent detachment that such an exercise requires. On the contrary, it seems preferable to leave the work open, even burning, to arouse the desire for discovery and preserve for those who venture there, its powerful, disturbing, deleterious, but oh so sublime aura.
